The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Residential School in Dharwad, Karnataka, is experiencing a serious facility shortage that is raising concerns for the well-being of the students, as per the Hindustan Times (HT). The school was first housed in a makeshift building in Hebballi and then moved to a rented structure in Lakamanahalli.

The 430 students at Lakamanahalli, who come from different districts like Haveri and Bagalkote, face many difficulties with the current arrangement. The building’s upper floor has classrooms that can hold up to 20 students each. Students sit on mats on the floor during lessons because the same room doubles as both a hostel and a classroom, reports add.

One major problem is that many rooms lack windows and doors. Another is that living areas and classrooms are close to restrooms and other facilities. During the morning hours, when students queue for showers and toilets, the situation becomes even more difficult. In some cases, a lack of water exacerbates the problem.

“Nearly 250 students studying from class 6th to 12th in the school, but the lack of a playground and shortage of classrooms cause trouble,” school teacher Prakash Addamani said as quoted by HT. Teacher Addamani went on to say that a plot near Tegur had already been identified for a new school building, but that the higher authorities planned to relocate the school to the BSNL building to make things easier for students. He also stated that the current school is housed in a rented building and that we cannot expect more from this location.

Meanwhile, parents of the children have raised concerns over the issue. “Due to the congested building and premises, students are facing hardships. The authorities should take immediate steps to address it. We have raised the issue at parents’ meetings also, and the officials promised to solve the problems in three months,” the parent of a Class 7 student, Appa Saheba, told HT.

Furthermore, sports activities take place in the open area in front of the rented building; however, the field’s boundaries are delineated by trash and litter. In addition, students have asked the concerned authorities to give these problems and the provision of necessary school facilities a top priority.

Reportedly, the additional director of the social welfare department, MS Allah Bakhsh, said that they have sent a proposal to the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS) to shift the school. Additionally, the KREIS has responded to the proposal, and the school will be shifted soon.
