Just 33% of 54,378 JEE Advanced 2025 qualifiers secured IIT seats as final allotments crossed sanctioned capacity, the JIC report shows.
Only 33% of JEE Advanced 2025 qualifiers secured seats in IITs.
In the final round of seat allotment at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the number of seats allotted exceeded the sanctioned capacity in several premier institutes, according to the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report.
This year, just 33% of the 54,378 candidates who qualified JEE Advanced 2025 managed to secure a seat in IITs.
IIT Kanpur conducted the Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced (JEE Advanced 2025) for the top 2,50,243 rank holders of JEE Mains. Of these, around 1.87 lakh candidates registered, and 1.80 lakh appeared for the exam. Out of them, 54,378 qualified and became eligible for the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling.
The sanctioned seat capacity across 23 IITs in 2025 was 18,160, including 3,632 female-only (supernumerary) seats.
However, the JIC report revealed that “18,188 seats were allotted, including 9 supernumerary DS seats, 11 supernumerary foreign nationals/ OCI/ PIO (F) seats, and 12 supernumerary MinCutOff seats. Additionally, 96 OCI/PIO (I) candidates (treated as Indian nationals) secured admission.”
This means that although the approved intake stood at 18,160, the final allotment increased to 18,188 – an excess of 28 seats.
The over-allotment was observed in several institutes. IIT Bombay admitted 1,364 students against its sanctioned 1,360 seats, IIT Delhi admitted 1,241 against 1,239, and IIT Kharagpur admitted 1,923 against 1,919. Similarly, IIT Hyderabad exceeded its 630 capacity by one, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad admitted 1,213 students against 1,210 seats, IIT Madras admitted 1,124 students against 1,121, while IIT Kanpur admitted five students more than its sanctioned capacity of 1,210.

Over the past three years, the number of qualifiers has grown by nearly 14,000, while seat capacity in IITs has expanded by about 1,500. Candidates who did not secure an IIT seat were allotted places in other institutions through JoSAA counselling. The process covers not only IITs but also 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), IIEST Shibpur, 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and 40 Government-Funded Technical Institutes (Other GFTIs).
The JIC report also noted ongoing litigations related to the exam. “Four cases were filed in the Supreme Court and 22 cases in various high courts in connection with JEE Advanced and JoSAA 2025,” the report stated.
Toppers And Scores
IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay zones produced the majority of candidates in the top 100 ranks, followed by IIT Hyderabad. The all-India topper, Rajit Gupta from the IIT Delhi zone, scored 332 out of 360 marks. The top female candidate, Devdutta Majhi from IIT Kharagpur zone, secured AIR 16 with 312 marks.
The results highlighted a stark contrast between top and bottom scorers. While general category toppers scored above 92%, those from OBC, EWS, SC, and ST categories were in the 80–86% range. In sharp contrast, the last rank holders across categories managed only 10–20% of the total marks. The lowest recorded scores in mathematics were just three and four marks.
